Gingivitis occurs as a result of inadequate oral hygiene. Untreated bacterial plaque mineralizes after a few days creating tartar, which is difficult to remove without specialist help. Apart from the aesthetic aspect, tartar contributes to unpleasant odour from the mouth. It also has a negative impact on teeth and gums. Acidogenic bacteria contained in the plaque demineralise the enamel and lead to the formation of carious cavities. Negative impact on gums is primarily related to their inflammation. Gums become red, swollen and bleed during tooth brushing. This results in the exposure of the tooth necks and leads to tooth sensitivity. Untreated gingivitis leads to periodontitis, in which the tissues surrounding the tooth structures are destroyed as a result of deposited and growing subgingival calculus. As a result, in advanced cases the teeth become loose and fall out.
